Life Skills Driving Instruction opened in the fall
of 2001, spurred on by a series of events in the
life of its founder, Gordy Leaf. His story of the
birth of our driving school in Minnesota follows:
I had been working as a supervisor in a job in which
I did not flourish for a variety of reasons. Through
a substantial amount of prayer and with the support
of my wife, I found the strength to leave that job
in May of 2001, with a family to support and no
immediate plans.
Shortly after leaving that job, my father became ill
and died. As sad an event as this was, I also felt
blessed to have been able to be at the hospital
almost every day during his illness, not being
limited by the demands of a job.
It was at my father’s wake that I first felt
compelled to start a driving school in Minnesota. I
was talking with two friends, both of whom had been
public school teachers for over 20 years. Both were
expressing how their jobs were becoming more and
more difficult with each passing year. Their jobs
were not fun for them anymore because of various
problems and challenges they faced in the public
school system. This was not good news for me to
hear, because I had been feeling led to do something
that involved working with kids, especially teens. I
had actually looked into returning to college at the
age of forty-four to get a teaching certificate.
During our conversation, one of my friends mentioned
that he and another person he worked with were
considering opening their own driving school as they
both had been doing behind-the-wheel instruction for
several years. As soon as he said it, I almost fell
over, knowing that this is what I was supposed to
do. Our conversation ended, and I walked away,
almost in shock yet knowing in my heart that I
needed to act on this.
After speaking with my wife about this new
direction. I began the process of becoming trained
and equipped to open the driving school.
Because our family has been blessed by this driving
school in Minnesota, we are honored to actively
support several groups and families that are
following their calling and working for the benefit
of those in need. The groups and families we support
include those who are overseas doing mission work,
as well as organizations in our area that are
working to help the lost and the fatherless. A
percentage of all of our revenue is given back to
help these people who have courageously followed
their calling and have a desire to reach the lost
and hurting.
Gordy and his wife, Lynn, reside in Princeton where
they home school their three children. |
